Living Well: Fashion Finds
It's not easy to find great clothing when you wear larger sizes. The colors, styles, patterns and fit—it's all a challenge. Here are some online resources and fashion tips, including some advice straight from Ruby, to help you look and feel your best.
Ruby's Thoughts
- There are still not a lot of choices for fashion that is stylish and suits my taste. Two of my favorite online sources are Roamans and Woman Within.
- Generally speaking, choose solids over prints.
- Fit is important! Stay away from very tight fitting clothes, but don't choose anything extremely oversized either.
- Have a seamstress custom create clothes just for you! If you find a pattern you love, have the same style created using different colors and fabrics.
Full-Sized Fashion Tips
- Contrary to what you may have heard, stripes aren't always the enemy; you just have to be careful with them. A completely straight horizontal stripe can draw the eye from side to side and make you look wider than you really are. If you love the look of stripes, try a zig-zag, diagonal or vertical pattern to create length and interest.
- Don't cram your feet into the wrong shoes just because they're cute. If the shoe doesn't fit, don't buy it! There are stylish shoes available in your size—you just need to know where to look. (Start with the links below.)
- Use a tailor. If you can't find a perfect fit (don't worry, most people can't), don't go a size down. Get a size up, and then have the garment tailored to fit you properly.
- Let your personal sense of style shine! Accessories are key. Jazz up a solid-colored outfit with a colorful necklace or some flashy bracelets.
- Choose straight- or wide-legged pants. Paired with a pair of pointy shoes, wide-legged pants will elongate your silhouette.
- The Internet is your friend! Check out the links below for fashion-forward resources.
